years ago, the Big 12 had a championship game, the Pac-12 was the
Pac-10 and the Southeastern Conference was putting together an
unprecedented string of national titles.
A different current is whipping through college football this season, however, as the SEC will need significant help to get a seventh consecutive Bowl Championship Series title and the presumptive Big 12 champion needs just two more regular-season wins to secure its spot in the title game.
BCS: Latest standings
With Alabama's 29-24 loss to Texas A&M, Kansas State (10-0) rose to No. 1 in this week's BCS standings, followed by Oregon (10-0) and Notre Dame (10-0). Though the Ducks were a near-unanimous No. 1 in the human polls, they came in fourth in the in the average of six computer rankings used in the BCS formula. Oregon has a small lead on Notre Dame in the BCS average (0.9497 to 0.9396) but its strength of schedule should only improve with remaining games against No. 13 Stanford, No. 16 Oregon State and a Pac-12 championship matchup against No. 17 UCLA or No. 18 USC.
